About Amsterdam

The city, founded in the late 12th century as a small fishing village, has grown to become the largest city in the Netherlands. This exciting city is known for its many canals with the elegant canal houses which have led to Amsterdam being called the "Venice of the North".

Amsterdam has a rich and diverse cultural heritage. Tourist attractions in Amsterdam are the Rijksmuseum, which features a magnificent selection of Dutch paintings from the Golden Age, the Anne Frank House in the center Amsterdam where Anne Frank wrote her famous diary during World War II and Artis Zoo, the oldest Zoo in the Netherlands.

Amsterdam Port

Amsterdam is the capital of the Netherlands. Its name is derived from "Amstel dam" pointing to the city's origin: a dam on the river Amstel. Amsterdam offers frequent sailings between Holland and northern England, all of which can be booked with AFerry

Getting to Amsterdam (IJmuiden)

By car
Take the A9 (travelling from Amsterdam, The Hague, Haarlem or Alkmaar) and turn off at the junction IJmuiden, Beverwijk (to A22). Follow the sign to IJmuiden and turn left at the traffic lights. Continue following the signs to IJmuiden.

From the Pontplein (ferry to Velsen Noord/Beverwijk) follow the Kanaaldijk (Canal Dam) along the North Sea Canal (on your right hand side) and the sign to the NEWCASTLE. At the junction of Kanaaldijk and De Geul, follow De Geul, underneath the viaduct. You'll then arrive at the Dokweg. Follow the Dokweg and take the first road to the right (at the Shell station). Follow the Halkade which leads you to the Felison Terminal and the DFDS Seaways ship.

By bus
In co-operation with a local Coach firm, DFDS Seaways provides a connecting Coach service between the Felison Terminal in IJmuiden and the Central Railway Station in Amsterdam. On days of departure the coach leaves the Central Station at 16.30, 1½ hours before the ship's departure.

After the arrival of a DFDS Seaways ship the transfer departs from IJmuiden heading into the City Centre. The Coach stop in Amsterdam is opposite the Central Station, in front of Hotel Victoria, Damrak 1.

By taxi
IJmuiden is a small village and there are not many taxis around. Also, they do not wait for the arrival of the ship and can be rather expensive.

Note that while ferries to Amsterdam are very popular there are other UK to Holland ferry routes.
