About the Ionian Islands

The Ionian Islands are situated off the west coast of Greece, and comprise the islands of Kefalonia, Kythira, Corfu, Zakynthos (Zante), Lefkada, Paxi and Ithaka. These beautiful Greek Islands have a rich and colourful history. The past occupation of the British and the French has given the islands a distinct feel that is quite different to the other Greek archipelagos.

The islands are famed for their clear blue waters, long beautiful sandy beaches enclosed by cliffs, quaint villages and a stunning countryside. Each Ionian island has it's very own unique charm and between them, they have everything you could possibly want from a holiday in the Greek islands. Why not try island hopping to capture the essence of each island?

The Greek Ionian Islands are situated off the west coast of Greece, with the exception of Kythira to the south, and comprise the islands of Corfu, Paxos (Paxi), Lefkas, Ithaca, Kefalonia, Zakynthos (Zante) and Kythira, as well as numerous smaller islands

The Ionian Islands are a chain of islands that stretch along the West coast of Greece and out into the Ionian Sea. They are much greener than many Greek islands and are a tranquil place for you to get away from the hustle and bustle of the touristy areas of Greece.

Travel around the Ionian Islands

The method of travel depends upon which of the islands you happen to be visiting. On most, though, it is a pretty safe bet to assume that there is the ability to rent a car. Due to the nature of the roads on some more remote parts of the islands, it always pays to get a four-wheeled drive.

Many islands also have small local buses, though times can be unpredictable. The islands have beautiful scenery, making bikes the perfect way to get around. On Zante, you can get bike tours of the islands, giving you the perfect opportunity to see things in a relaxed and exciting way.

Things to see on the Ionian Islands
