More About Sweden

Sweden is a country with serene lakes and extensive forests.

Sweden has a lot to offer with excellent roads and transport links between various islands and between the main Swedish cities.

The Swedes are proud of their history and culture which is evident in the number of museums they have.

While in Sweden, you can also visit the longest single span Oresund Bridge between Denmark and Sweden.

Sweden is a great place for anyone who likes outside sports, including skiing, snowboarding or fishing.

The climate caters for more winter sports which aren't so readily available in the UK, so it's a brilliant opportunity to try something new. You never know, you might turn out to be quite good!

Sweden Travel Guide

Get a Sweden ferry from the UK, Denmark, Germany or Poland and you'll discover that Sweden's scenery has a gentle charm - more so than that of neighbouring Norway's rugged coast. Sweden has extensive forests and there are thousands of lakes to visit. Culturally, Swedes have an air of reserved calm, while Volvo, Abba and IKEA are household name exports.

Travel in Sweden

Sweden has fantastic public transport, with fast trains and buses. These are however quite expensive. However, don't panic just yet. There an ingenious number of ways to get around these high fares. If you are in the capital city, Stockholm, you can buy a Stockholm card. Not only does this get you free travel on all public transport in the city (including the very efficient metro station which, intriguingly, has exactly 100 stations), but gives you free access to nearly 70 museums.

If you are travelling further afield by train, you can buy the Interrail card. This gives you a certain number of `travel days', during which you can travel on an unlimited number of trains.

Not only does the Stockholm card get you free travel on all public transport in the city, but gives you free access to nearly 70 museums.

Driving in Sweden is useful in the south, as it enables you to get out of the biggest cities. If you are from the UK, please be aware that the average speed limit is much lower in Sweden, and that headlights need to be turned on at all times. In addition, care is needed when driving in the countryside: collisions with deer and moose are not uncommon and can frequently be fatal. The legal drink drive limit in Sweden is very low and police can take blood by force: do not drive whilst under the influence of anything, no matter how little you've drunk.

Things to do in Sweden

Sweden is heaven for anyone who likes outside sports, including skiing, snowboarding or fishing. Pike fishing in particular is popular. Skiing in Sweden is more often cross-country skiing than going straight down mountains, so it is recommended that you ensure you are fit before you begin. Swimming is also popular in Sweden and, if the prospect of getting into a stream of melt-water is just a little too unpalatable for you, there are many outdoor heated swimming pools that make a great compromise.

You can find most of the attractions that Stockholm has to offer in the Inner District. These attractions include not only great restaurants and shopping opportunities but also Galma Stan, Stockholm's old Quarter, and the Royal Palace. The Stockholm archipelago is a stunning series of islands that stretch 60 kilometres out of the city and are guaranteed to take your breath away.

For those wanting a more cultural experience, the Museum of History features a fascinating display on the Vikings, the legendary ancestors of Sweden's past. The Vasa Museum, also in Stockholm, features a full size preserved 17th century warship, making it a great place to take any children.
