It is also legend that the island was created after Poseidon, the Greek god of the sea, impaled a Titan, Polyvotis, with his trident and, where the force was so strong, apparently split the island of Kos into two; Kos and Nisyros.
The island itself is idyllic, peaceful and very laidback, with superb beaches that are perfect for snorkelling and windsurfing, two very popular sports in the Cycladean region.
