About Patmos

In church tradition, St John was imprisoned on the island of Patmos and it was supposedly from Patmos that he wrote his famous (and quite trippy) Revelation of St John. This was one of the most controversial books to appear in the Bible and it was several centuries before it was recognised as being inspired by all the different churches.

The island's capital is Pothia, which has many attractions and amenities, including the popular Archaeology and Folk Museum and the Nautical Museum which chronicles Kalymnos' history of sponge diving.

There is plenty to see and do on Kalymnos; available activities include rock-climbing, wind-surfing, yachting, diving and mountain biking. The island also has along and interesting history; it was first inhabited in the 11th century B.C., and traces of these ancient inhabitants can be found all over the island.
