Getting to the port of Ponza

The address for the port can be found to the right. The port and port area, simply known as "porto" is easily found and as most of the island is connected by a road network, the port is easily reached by car. Porto is the largest settlement on the island.

About Ponza

In the Summer months Ponza is a popular destination for Romans wishing to escape the heat of the capital. Dining on fresh seafood in the pretty pastel coloured buildings that surround the port is particularly popular. The scenic port, which is generally filled with small fishing vessels, is surrounded by restaurants, cafes, bakeries and fishmongers. Swimming in the island's crystal clear waters is also popular and some of the most easily accessible beaches can become quite busy in the summer.

Ponza's close proximity to the Italian capital means that the island has been a popular getaway destination right the way from ancient times to the present day. In Imperial times, the nobility built luxurious villas on the island, exploiting its vistas as they relaxed in swimming pools hewn from rock. After the fall of the Empire, the island was abandoned and was not repopulated until 1734, when Charles III of Spain - at the time southern Italy was ruled by the Bourbon dynasty - founded Porto.

Renting a small boat in Ponza is a particularly good idea if you want to escape the Summer crowds and all you need to do so is an ordinary driving licence. Once you're off after a few brief instructions, you're free to explore the unspoilt coastline and seek out your own private pieces of paradise.
