About Umea

Umea is known as the "Town of Silver Birches" and is located at the mouth of the Ume river. After the Great Fire of Umea in 1888, the entire city was rebuilt and thousands of birch trees were planted lining the streets.

The Bildmuseet museum is one of the main attractions in Umea. Exhibiting contemporary art from Sweden and around the world, you can experience paintings, sculptures, graffiti, design and architecture with around 15 unique exhibitions each year. The museum is open throughout the year and entry is free of charge.

At Älgens Hus you will get a once in a lifetime experience by getting right up close to an elk. Umea is home to Europe's first elk farm, where you can touch tame elks - something you would struggle to do anywhere else.

About Vaasa

Vaasa is connected to Umea by Wasaline ferries, and like Umea, Vaasa suffered a large fire in 1852 that left much of the city in ruins. The decision was made to move Vaasa closer to the sea, and Swedish architect Carl Axel Setterberg was appointed the prvincial architext to rebuild the city.

You can still visit old Vaasa where you will find ruins and an 18th century court building that survived the fire but has been converted into the Church of Korholm.

If you are fascinated by modern architecture, you'll find some unique buildings in Vaasa. Look out for the Campus of Vaasa University, the Center City Block and Huutoniemi Church in particular.
